Which template to use

• Basic — First Name, Last Name, Email, Phone. A personal list, a class roster, a short vendor sheet. Four columns, no extras. Pick this if every row is just a person and a number.
• Detailed — the Basic set plus Company, Job Title, Address and Notes. Use it for a client book or a team directory, when the vCard should carry ORG, TITLE, ADR and NOTE. Address cells can contain commas; the download quotes them automatically.
• Google Contacts— Given Name, Family Name, E-mail 1 - Value, Phone 1 - Value, Organization 1 - Name, Organization 1 - Title. These are the header names Google's own export uses, so a direct CSV import at contacts.google.com maps without guesswork. The converter on this site auto-detects them too if you go the VCF route for iPhone or Android.

Headers are case-insensitive. First Name + Last Name (or Given Name + Family Name) plus a phone or email is enough for a useful card. Cells that contain commas are quoted automatically in the download.

CSV contacts template — FAQ

• What columns does the CSV need for contacts?

  A header row and one contact per row. First Name, Last Name, Email and Phone are enough for a usable address book — that is the Basic template. Company, Job Title, Address and Notes are optional extras on the Detailed template. Column order does not matter. The converter on this site also recognises aliases such as Given Name, Family Name, E-mail 1 - Value, Phone 1 - Value, Organization 1 - Name and Mobile.

• Which template works with Google Contacts?

  The Google Contacts template. Its headers — Given Name, Family Name, E-mail 1 - Value, Phone 1 - Value, Organization 1 - Name, Organization 1 - Title — are the names Google's own export uses, so the Import dialog at contacts.google.com maps them without guesswork. The Basic and Detailed templates usually import too (First Name / Last Name / Email / Phone are recognised), but unusual extras may land in the wrong field. If you are going through the VCF converter instead, any of the three templates works: you assign columns explicitly.

• Can I add contact photos to the template?

  No. A CSV is a text table — there is no photo column that phones or Google Contacts will turn into a contact picture. Fill in names, numbers, emails and the other text fields, convert to VCF, and import. Photos already stored in Google Contacts, iCloud or Outlook stay there; a spreadsheet round-trip will not invent them. A .vcf can hold a PHOTO property, but nothing generated from these templates writes one.

• What phone number format should I use?

  Include the country code, with a leading plus: +1 415 555 0142, +44 20 7946 0958. Spaces, dashes and parentheses are fine. In Excel, format the phone column as Text before you paste — General format strips the +, eats a leading zero and can turn a long number into scientific notation. The sample rows in every template already use +1 numbers so you can see the shape.

• Does the template work with Excel and Google Sheets?

  Yes. Download the CSV, open it in Excel (File → Open) or Google Sheets (File → Import), replace the sample rows with your contacts, and save or download as CSV again. Keep the header row exactly as it is. Then drop the file on csv-to-vcf.com — or, from Sheets, File → Download → Comma Separated Values (.csv) / Microsoft Excel (.xlsx) and convert from there. Do not rename the header cells if you want auto-detection to fire.

• What happens to columns the converter doesn't recognize?

  They are ignored. The converter maps First Name, Last Name, Email, Phone (and Google-style Given Name, Family Name, E-mail 1 - Value, Phone 1 - Value, Organization 1 - Name, Organization 1 - Title) plus common extras such as Company, Job Title, Address and Notes. Anything else stays in the spreadsheet and does not appear in the .vcf. Extra columns never break the conversion; if a header is unusual, assign it by hand in Step 2 of the converter instead of relying on auto-detect.
