CSV to vCard for iPhone: the Full Import Walkthrough
iPhones don't read CSV contact lists — Apple's import format is vCard (.vcf), and iCloud's importer is picky about which version. This guide takes you from spreadsheet to synced iPhone contacts: convert with the right settings, then import via iCloud.com (best for bulk), AirDrop, Mail or Files.
Step 1 — Convert the CSV with iPhone-friendly settings
- Open the CSV to VCF converterand drop in your .csv or Excel file — it's processed on your device, never uploaded.
- Verify the column mapping and the preview cards (names, numbers, emails all in the right place).
- Select vCard 3.0. This matters more on Apple than anywhere else: iCloud.com's importer is the strictest common importer and 3.0 is its native dialect.
- Keep one .vcf file with all contacts and download.
Step 2 — Route A: iCloud.com (best for big lists)
- On a computer, sign in at icloud.com with the Apple ID your iPhone uses, and open Contacts.
- Click the gear icon (bottom-left) or the ⋯ menu — Apple moves it between redesigns — and choose Import vCard…
- Select the .vcf you downloaded. The contacts appear in the iCloud list right away.
- On the iPhone, the same contacts sync down automatically (Settings → your name → iCloud → Contacts must be on — it is by default).
Bulk-friendly and reversible: the import happens into one account you can inspect on a big screen, and a bad batch can be selected and deleted there before it pollutes your phone.
Step 2 — Route B: on the iPhone itself
Email the .vcf to yourself, open the message in the Mail app, tap the attachment, then tap Add All Contacts. Every card in the file is added in one tap.
Right-click the .vcf on the Mac → Share → AirDrop → your iPhone. The phone pops the contact preview immediately — confirm to add.
Save the .vcf into Files (iCloud Drive or On My iPhone), tap it, and use the share sheet → Contacts. Note: this route imports into the account set under Settings → Contacts → Default Account.
Troubleshooting
- iCloud.com rejects the file or imports gibberish: almost always a version problem. Regenerate with vCard 3.0 (not 2.1 or 4.0) and try again.
- Only the first contact imported: some mail apps preview just one card of a multi-card file. Use the iCloud.com route, or open the file from Files instead of the mail preview.
- Contacts in iCloud but not on the phone: Settings → your name → iCloud → Contacts on; then check the Lists filter in the Contacts app — you may be viewing only a Gmail/Exchange account.
- Duplicates: Contacts → Lists → All Contacts shows a Duplicates Foundbanner on iOS 16+ — tap it to merge. Avoid importing the same .vcf twice on iCloud.com; it doesn't deduplicate.
- Numbers missing the international prefix:the + was lost in the spreadsheet before conversion (Excel's General format does this). Fix the column as Text per the Excel guide, reconvert, re-import.

Which vCard version does iPhone need?
Use vCard 3.0. It's the version iCloud itself exports and the one its web importer accepts most reliably — iCloud.com is known to reject or mis-read some 4.0 and 2.1 files. The Contacts app on the phone is more forgiving, but 3.0 is the version that works everywhere in Apple's ecosystem.
Can the iPhone import a CSV file directly?
No. Neither the iPhone's Contacts app nor iCloud.com accepts CSV — Apple's contact import format is vCard only. Converting the CSV to a .vcf (with the converter on this site) is the required first step; after that the import itself takes a minute.
Where is Import vCard on iCloud.com?

Check that Contacts sync is on: Settings → your name → iCloud → make sure Contacts is enabled. Also check the Contacts app's group/list filter (Lists, top-left) — if a non-iCloud account (Gmail, Exchange) is the default, imported iCloud contacts may be hidden from the current view. Settings → Contacts → Default Account shows which account new contacts go to.
Will importing create duplicates?
Importing the same file twice on iCloud.com creates duplicates — the importer doesn't merge. The Contacts app on iOS 16+ detects duplicates (Contacts → Lists → All Contacts shows a Duplicates Found banner) and can merge them. Safer habit: import once, check, and if the mapping was wrong delete the bad batch before re-importing.
Can I AirDrop the vCard file to my iPhone?
Yes — from a Mac, right-click the .vcf → Share → AirDrop → your iPhone. The phone opens the contacts preview directly and you tap to add. It's the fastest cable-free route when you already work on a Mac.
Do accents, Chinese or Arabic names import correctly on iPhone?
Yes — vCard 3.0 output here is UTF-8, which iOS and iCloud handle natively. If you ever see mojibake, the file likely came from a converter that wrote Latin-1; regenerate here with version 3.0.
